Frain Dainty, our Adviser for North Wales, writes this month on Wrexham CAP's positive experience attending the Freshers' Fayre event in Wrexham University.

‍

More than 100 students took part in interactive activities and discussions around personal safety, alcohol awareness and looking after themselves and their friends during a successful Freshers' Fayre event in Wrexham on 24 September.

‍

The event built on the ongoing work of the Wrexham CAP and the Wrexham Women's Night Time Safety Charter, which was launched alongside the CAP earlier this year. Partners came together to engage students as they began university life, encouraging them to think about how they can stay safe and support one another during nights out.

‍

Centred around the theme "No Friend Left Behind", the event encouraged students to reflect on the importance of looking after friends and making informed decisions in social situations. Representatives from partner organisations such as Wrexham Trading Standards and North Wales Police spoke with students about practical ways to reduce risks and ensure everyone gets home safely after a night out.

‍

A series of interactive activities, including scenario-based decision-making exercises, proved particularly popular. The activities gave students an opportunity to explore real-life situations they may encounter and generated rich conversations around alcohol consumption, concerns about drink spiking and wider personal safety issues.

‍

Students showed impressive awareness throughout the event, demonstrating an ability to quickly identify potential dangers and consider the safest course of action. Many displayed confidence in making positive choices, not only for themselves but also for their friends, reinforcing the event's key message that everyone has a role to play in creating a safer night-time environment.

‍

Partners were encouraged by the level of engagement and the willingness of students to discuss potentially challenging situations openly and honestly. The event highlighted the value of early intervention and education in helping young people develop the skills and confidence needed to stay safe while enjoying student life.

‍

By working together, the Wrexham CAP and partners from across the community continue to promote a culture where students feel empowered to make responsible decisions, look out for one another and ensure that no friend is ever left behind.
