A Lewisham student has been recognised for his outstanding contribution to supporting young people through a creative project focused on alcohol awareness and positive decision-making.
Louis Chalk, a student with the Young Lewisham Project, was given his award by Community Alcohol Partnerships at a ceremony held in the House of Commons in recognition of his leadership, creativity and commitment to peer education through music.
CAPs are community-led partnerships which bring together local police, councils, schools, retailers, and community groups. Their primary goal is to reduce underage alcohol consumption and the resulting harms, improving health and well-being, and enhancing the wider community.
Louis was nominated for the award by the Young Lewisham Project for his role in a youth-led music production and songwriting project designed to explore the risks of alcohol misuse. His work helped to open up honest conversations around topics that are often difficult to address in more traditional settings, creating space for discussion, reflection and greater awareness.
Beyond his own music, Louis actively encouraged others to get involved. He welcomed peers into studio sessions, shared his skills and supported them to express themselves creatively. His approach created a safe, inclusive space that boosted participation and drew more young people in.
Louis’ music continues to reach new audiences, with tracks broadcast on Lewisham Radio and performances at both the House of Commons and local events. There are plans to build on this momentum with more performances at youth and community events, helping to extend the project’s reach and impact.
CAP Director Kate Winstanley said: “Louis’ story shows just how powerful creative approaches can be in engaging young people and opening up important conversations about alcohol and wellbeing. What stands out is not just his talent, but his willingness to bring others with him, creating a space where young people feel heard, supported and able to express themselves.
“This is exactly what CAP is about, giving young people the confidence, opportunities and support to make informed choices and to influence their peers in a positive way. His award is very well-deserved.”
