Govan Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP) has been recognised for its work in educating young people about underage drinking by being awarded CAP of the Year Scotland.
CAPs are community-led partnerships which bring together local police, councils, schools, retailers, and community groups. Their primary goal is to reduce underage alcohol consumption and the resulting harms, improving health and well-being, and enhancing the wider community.
The partnership was officially launched at Asda Govan in 2025 with strong support from local organisations and young people from Govan High School. Since launch, partners have met regularly, sharing information and working together to make sure that young people in the area make positive choices about a whole series of challenges facing them, including alcohol. Partners in the CAP include Police Scotland, Scottish Fire & Rescue, Glasgow Life, Govan Youth Information Project, Govan High School and Glasgow City Council.
A major milestone was the Partnership Youth Engagement Event at Govan High School, which brought together police, fire services, youth organisations, Glasgow Life and local radio partners. Almost 200 young people took part in a day of interactive activities designed to engage and inform. Alongside fun sessions, young people received guidance on alcohol awareness, vaping, risky behaviours, anti-social behaviour and future opportunities, including careers and volunteering, all delivered in a relaxed and approachable environment. Additional creative activities, including graffiti art and BMX sessions, have also provided young people with positive alternatives to anti-social behaviour, and schools reported strong engagement and enthusiasm from participants.
PC Keiran Traynor form Govan Police Office, who coordinates the CAP locally, said “We are delighted with this award which recognises the work by all the partners involved in the CAP in Govan. Engagement with young people has been a key element of our work in the last year and it’s something we will build on as we move forward.”
Commenting on the award CAP Director Kate Winstanley said: “Govan CAP shows how quickly partnerships can make a positive difference when they listen to local communities and work together to support young people. By combining education, outreach and positive activities, partners are helping young people make safer choices while building stronger relationships between services and the community. It is encouraging to see such strong early progress and the foundations now in place for long-term impact.”
She continued: “Congratulations to the team on being recognised for its outstanding work.”
The Govan CAP team received their award at a ceremony held in the House of Commons on 2nd March 2026.
