Pavement ‘street art’ is being used in the battle against underage drinking in Newtown.

Pavement stencils were put in place by the Newtown Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP) as part of the Dyfed-Powys Force Action Day on Tuesday, October 10.

The paint spray is chalk-based and temporary, and has been used in other CAP areas to warn adults not to buy alcohol for children and support shop staff by showing that proxy purchasing will not be tolerated and shops have the right to refuse sales.

This action is designed to support the very successful training event earlier in the year when Newtown licensees and their staff received free training as part of an initiative to tackle underage drinking in the town.

The training sessions were arranged by the Newtown CAP, an initiative backed by the Welsh Government. They provided those working within the licensed trade with the tools and knowledge to address and challenge minors attempting to buy alcohol and over 18s trying to buy alcohol on their behalf.

News and Blogs

Since this project was delivered there have been dramatic changes in the behaviour of many of the children. This has meant that, for example, three children who were on the verge of exclusion are now fully engaged in the life of the school. The children talk very positively about the work that they completed with CAP and the project generally.
